At the
age of
two and
a half,
Jenny
McCarthy’s
son,
Evan,
was
diagnosed
with
autism.
The
story of
his
diagnosis
in her
best-selling
book,
Louder
Than

A
Mother’s
Journey
in
Healing
Autism
(Dutton,
2007),
is
gripping,
but
McCarthy’s
trials
and
victories
after
the
diagnosis
are even
more so.
She
earns
her
Ph.D. in
“Google
research”
as she
pieces
together
the big
picture
of her
son’s
disease,
and
struggles
to find
out how
to help
him
heal.
The
tactics
she ends
up using
to help
her son
are
successful,
and by
the end
of the
book,
Evan no
longer
fits the
diagnostic
category
of
autism.
Key to
Evan’s
healing:
a
combination
of
intensive
early
special
education,
a
gluten-
and
casein free
diet,
nutritional
supplements,
a
protocol
designed
to boost
the

and a
protocol
designed
to

a

Evan
made
some
progress
when
his

removed
all

and
got
him

which
included
antifungal

and
a
special

Evan—according
to
McCarthy—“went
full-blown

Because
she

she
knew
that
his

meant
that

for
her

Yeast
Overgrowth
—The
Big
Picture
According to Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) doctors and to parents of autistic children who have tried yeast-busting protocols, yeast overgrowth is a major aspect of autism—an aspect that can be controlled. Yeast overgrowth is also implicated in a large number of other conditions that affect both children and adults. Many of these conditions persist until the issue of fungal yeast is addressed.
In a healthy body, yeast cohabitates in a friendly balance with probiotic bacteria—the “friendly” bugs like L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, and L. rhamnosus. Adequate probiotic populations are essential for overall health; they promote good digestion and immune function and improve resistance to infections, allergies and eczema. Antibiotics, birth control pills, and other prescription drugs knock out the friendly bugs, allowing yeast to grow out of control. Diets high in simple carbohydrates and sugars feed the yeast, while a lack of fiber-rich vegetables and whole grains deprives remaining probiotic populations of the foods they need to thrive.
Yeast releases toxic substances into the gastrointestinal tract that can damage the wall of the small intestine, leading to leaky gut, food allergies, and gastrointestinal dysfunction. As seen in Jenny McCarthy’s son, yeast overgrowth can affect mood and energy levels. It may also contribute to menstrual problems.
Adding a supplemental probiotic to the diet and reducing consumption of simple carbohydrates and sugars may be enough to maintain balance for some. Research suggests that restoring these beneficial bacteria with a high-quality supplement can reduce irritable bowel symptoms and improve immune function. Symptoms suggesting more extensive yeast overgrowth may call for a more comprehensive nutritional yeast eradication program. For both children and adults, a complete antifungal kit may be crucial.
BioActive Nutrients' Antifungal Kit
BioActive Nutrients (Spooner, Wisconsin) has developed an antifungal kit that comprehensively addresses yeast overgrowth and the restoration of probiotic bacterial populations in the body. The kit is most effective when coupled with a diet that gives yeast nothing to grow on. For full information on the anti-candida diet, go to Doug Kaufmann’s web site, www.know-the-cause.com. Doug is a world-renowned expert on this subject, and has written many informative books and articles that will help you eat to beat yeast.
Although it can take from four to six months of use to restore the proper balance of yeasts and probiotics in the body, those who have done so know how worthwhile this process is. (Be sure to work with a qualified health professional, especially with young children.)
The kit includes:
BioPLUS—Guy Evans, BioActive’s president and CEO, emphasizes the importance of excellent overall nutrition for anyone who is about to enter into an intensive yeast-eradication program. As yeast dies off and is excreted, the body undergoes significant stress, and good overall nutrition can help reduce the impact of this dieoff process.
Probiotic-CSP, with cranberry seed powder— BioActive’s probiotic formulation contains three billion live organisms at the time of manufacture. Its blend includes several lactobacillus strains (L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. reuteri, L. fermentum, L. casei) and Bifidobacterium bifidum (B. bifidum). Cranberry has been found to reduce the ability of infectious agents such as yeasts to “stick” to mucous membranes in the urogenital tract, sinuses, intestines, and mouth.
UGN (undecylenic acid, grapefruit seed extract, and neem)—Each component of this antifungal combination works in its own way against fungal overgrowth. Undecylenic acid is an unsaturated fatty acid that inhibits yeast and mold growth. Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) inhibits fungal, bacterial, viral, and parasitic overgrowth. Neem is an age-old Ayurvedic medicine with many medicinal uses; here, it is used for its antifungal and antioxidant properties.
Caprylic acid—This fatty acid is rapidly absorbed by the body and promotes better absorption of minerals, vitamins, and essential fats. It is especially effective at eradicating Candida albicans, as it directly interferes with this yeast’s growth and replication.
Olive leaf—Extract of olive leaf contains oleuropein—a phenolic compound that, when broken down in the body, directly inhibits growth of fungi, viruses, parasites, and “bad” bacteria. Olive leaf is currently used as a natural therapy for many conditions, including sinusitis, irritable bowel, psoriasis, and vaginitis—all of which may be related to yeast.
Apple cider vinegar and odorless garlic—Both of these are traditional home remedies for infections. They have antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral action in the body, as well as powerful detoxifying effects. Garlic can slow the growth of or kill off more than 60 different strains of fungi and 20 strains of bacteria, and has also been found to protect against cardiovascular disease.
Fiber: Green Sweep, Flaxium, or Psyllium—Choose one or more of these fiber supplements to round out your BioActive Nutrients antifungal kit. Fiber acts like a gentle broom in the intestinal tract, sweeping toxins and yeasts out and promoting total emptying of the bowels. All of these fiber supplements are useful for blood pressure and cholesterol control. When you add these high-quality, gluten-free fiber supplements to your program, it’s easy to reach the standard goal of 25 to 40 grams of daily fiber.
How to use the BioActive Nutrients Antifungal Kit
The Probiotic-CSP, BioPLUS multi, and fiber supplements are designed for long-term, daily use. As yeasts may begin to develop resistance to caprylic acid, olive leaf, UGN, and garlic/apple cider vinegar, the experts at BioActive Nutrients advise that you rotate your use of these agents. This will help to ensure that they each maintain maximum potency.

Dinner company caters to people with dietary restrictions, allergies
By Barbara Correa, Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 03/29/2008 10:56:41 PM PDT
When Roni Piterman started selling prepared meals last year, she hoped to build a business that would thrive on the appetites of clients who were too busy to cook.
But after being inundated with requests for sugar-free, gluten-free and allergy-sensitive meals, she realized there was money to be made catering to people with dietary restrictions and food allergies.
Even more important to her, Piterman quickly saw how many people - including her own son - she could help by opening a business for careful eaters.
Piterman learned that in addition to helping people avoid stomachaches and other allergic reactions, the right diet also seemed to help relieve symptoms in those diagnosed with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and a host of other conditions.
Although the medical community says there is no proof that certain diets can help those with autism and other diseases, Piterman and a number of her clients are convinced of dietary healing powers.
"Our original business was a make-and-take ...," said Piterman, who opened Your Dinner Secret in Woodland Hills with her sister, Ari Kosmal. "Then we found out about the gluten- and casein-free diet for families with autism. The surprise was how quickly it overtook our business."
As Piterman began researching food and its relationship to autism, ADHD and celiac disease - an abnormal response to gluten in wheat and other grains - she began to recognize some of her son's problems.
I was looking at it from a business standpoint, but it kept knocking on my mommy head and saying, `I should try this."'
Ethan, now 9, had been diagnosed with ADHD and was taking Ritalin. After studying casein - a protein found in milk - and its effect on some kids, Piterman decided to eliminate it and gluten from his diet. That process took two months, but the results were dramatic.
"When I removed casein from my son's diet, within three days, my parents walked into my house and he was watching the Cartoon Network. His grandpa said, `Hey Ethan, how you doing?' And he turned and said, `Hi Papa.' And we were just crying because it was the first time he ever did that."
Before the change in diet, there was no way to get Ethan's attention if he was hyperfocused on the TV. While acknowledging there's nothing harmful in removing gluten and casein from the diet, some doctors are far from convinced that it can improve conditions such as autism and ADHD, said Dr. David Heber, director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition.
"There are people who have genuine celiac disease and casein allergy. Both of those are real things that cause gastrointestinal problems," Heber said. "But when you start to connect it to ADHD and autism, you're on much shakier ground."
Still, he said that if people see results from a particular diet and it's healthy, they should continue it.
Plenty of other parents, like Piterman, say their kids have improved markedly after changing their diets.
"We see a much more expressive person," said Mary Spickler, who put her 6-year-old autistic son on a gluten-free, casein-free diet in September. "He is talking a lot more. The other day, I listened to him and his sister play International Space Station in his toy box for an hour. We never would have seen that a year ago."
Celebrity mom Jenny McCarthy boosted awareness of the diet-behavior connection with her 2007 book, "Louder Than Words," which chronicles her son's struggles with autism. McCarthy is the official spokeswoman for Talk About Curing Autism, a support group based in Newport Beach.
With all this attention on diet as a cure, the "free from" food business is booming. The market for gluten-free foods and beverages in the United States was about $700million in 2006, and it is projected to grow about 15percent to 25percent a year to $1.3billion in sales by 2010, according to Mintel, a consumer research group with a focus on the specialty-food industry.
Sales of gluten-free bread, cereal and pasta are driven largely by the increasing awareness of celiac disease, but the diet is quickly becoming associated with autism and ADHD in children. To appeal to worried parents, companies large and small are putting out gluten-free cookies, snacks and even gluten- and casein-free chicken nuggets.
Supermarkets are also picking up on the trend. In addition to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, Gelson's is starting to stock more gluten-free foods, said Elaine Monarch, founder of Studio City-based Celiac Disease Foundation.
Piterman is quick to point out that the gluten-free, casein-free diet does not work for everyone. But most parents are willing to try something if they think it will help their child.
"It is no coincidence that the greatest numbers of new product introductions were in categories popular with kids, including bakery, dairy, desserts and ice cream, and snacks," the Mintel report said.
"It's important to me that he has food he enjoys," said Spickler, the Burbank mother. She said the family decided to go gluten- and casein-free as a team, so her son wouldn't feel left out, and for the most part it works. "My husband has the most difficult time. When he's at work, he'll go and have a big, fat pizza."
Spickler said she spends about $100 to $200 a month on gluten- and casein-free food from Your Dinner Secret, where a chicken cacciatore serving two goes for $20.75, and four hamburger buns cost $10.50. She buys about eight to 10 meals, plus daily bread, from the company, and the rest of the time she shops mostly Trader Joe's, which has some gluten-free items.
"I just had to move things around in our food budget," she said.
Another customer, Aimee Manis of Calabasas, said buying meals there actually saves her money.
"There's no way I could go to Whole Foods and buy the same quality of chicken for the same prices," said Manis, who buys gluten-free for herself because gluten makes her feel like she has the flu - her children don't have the allergy. She said it is possible to find all the ingredients to cook gluten-free at home, but Whole Foods is probably one of the only options, and it's expensive. She said nonallergenic take-out stores such as Your Dinner Secret are hard to find.
That explains the company's rapid growth. With 600 clients nationwide, Your Dinner Secret started making deliveries twice a month to a hyperbaric center in Irvine (hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one treatment for autism).
Your Dinner Secret has a gluten-free commercial kitchen at its Ventura Boulevard storefront. It also buys baked goods from a special bakery in Culver City.
To meet its demand in the East and Midwest, the company recently opened a distribution center in Missouri.
"It's become such a blessing," Piterman said. "It looked like a good opportunity and a wonderful way to help others. We wanted to give back to our communities."

cells, relieving depression and aiding weight loss.
Goji berries contain 500 times more vitamin C than oranges
by weight and more beta-carotene than carrots making them a
superb source of vitamin A. Together with vitamin E and
essential fatty acids, these berries are ideal for any
anti-aging and beauty regime. They also contain
polysaccharides, one of which has been found to stimulate
the secretion of the rejuvenating human growth hormone by
the pituitary gland, as well as B vitamins, 21 minerals and
18 amino acids.
The most well documented case of longevity is that of Li
Qing Yuen, who lived to the age of 252. Born in 1678, he is
said to have married 14 times with 11 generations of
posterity before his death in 1930. Li Qing Yuen reportedly
consumed goji berries daily.
A study cited in Dr. Mindell’s book ‘Goji: The Himalayan
Health Secret’, observed that 67 per cent of elderly people
that were given a daily dose of the berries for 3 weeks
experienced dramatic immune system enhancement and a
significant improvement in spirit and optimism.
2) Aloe Vera
Foget botox, Aloe Vera increases collagen production 100%
naturally for a youthful, wrinkle-free complexion and plump,
beautiful skin. The ultimate botox alternative!
The inner gel of the aloe vera leaf contains around 200
active compounds with over 75 nutrients. These include 20
minerals, 18 amino acids and 12 vitamins (even vitamin B12 –
one of the very few plant sources of this vitamin). Aloe
vera also has anti-microbial properties fighting fungi and
bacteria and houses anti-inflammatory plant steroids and
enzymes. Aloe vera is known to aid digestion and
elimination, boost the immune system, and be highly
effective at healing, moisturizing and rejuvianting the
skin, naturally stimulating the production of collagen.
Aloe vera is best eaten fresh when possible (you can order
large aloe vera leaves which last a few weeks refridgerated).
Scrape out the inside gel, avoiding the outside of the leaf
which is a strong laxative, and blend with fruit for the
ultimate beautifying smoothie. Aloe vera has a mild flavour
though a slight bitter edge, hence is best combined with
fruit.
3) Avocados
Avocados are smoothing and softening for the skin and easily
absorbed; compared with almond, corn, olive, and soybean
oils, avocado oil has the highest skin penetration rate.
Avocados are rich nutrients and like olive oil, contain
healthy monounsaturated fats. They can aid weight-management
by satiating the appetite and provide healthy oils that can
be utilised by the body and protect against heart disease by
lowering cholesterol.
Avocado also contains vitamin E (excellent
for the skin), antioxidant carotenoids and the master
antioxidant glutathione that is exceptionally
powerful and has anti-carcinogenic potential. High levels of
glutathione are found in the liver where the
elimination of toxic materials takes place.
Glutathione is effective against pollutants such as
cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes as well as ultra-violet
radiation. Research is currently exploring the potential
benefits of glutathione for numerous conditions including
cancer, heart disease, memory loss, arthritis, Parkinson's
disease, eczema, liver disorders, heavy metal poisoning and
AIDS.
4) Chlorella
The nucleic acids RNA and DNA in Chlorella (one of the
highest known sources of such) direct cellular growth and
repair and enable our bodies to utilize nutrients more
effectively, eliminate toxins and avoid disease. The
production of nucleic acids in the body declines
progressively as we age, which is no doubt why their intake
is recommended by Dr. Benjamin Frank in ‘The No-Aging Diet’.
Paul Pitchford in ‘Healing With Whole Foods’ writes that
‘insufficient nucleic acid causes premature aging as well as
weakened immunity’, Research at the Medical College of
Kanazawa in Japan found that mice that were fed chlorella
had a 30 per cent increase in life span. Replenishing RNA
and DNA can be key to overall health, immunity and
longevity.
In addition to nucleic acids, chlorella is jam-packed with
vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and amino acids,
making it an incredibly rejuvinating and health-promoting
superfood. Spirulina is a virtuous equivalent.
5) Bee pollen
When it comes to young and beautiful skin, bee pollen has
outstanding gifts. Swedish dermatologist Dr. Lars-Erik Essen
uses bee pollen to successfully treat acne and other skin
conditions and observes it’s beautifying and anti-aging
effects. He reports that bee pollen ‘seems to prevent
premature aging of the cells and stimulates growth of new
skin tissue. It offers effective protection against
dehydration and injects new life into dry cells. It smoothes
away wrinkles and stimulates a life-giving blood supply to
all skin cells.’ He believes it’s skin rejuvintoin
properties are due to its high concentration of nucleic
acids RNA and DNA, as well as its natural antibiotic action.
Bee pollen has a host of other health-promoting benefits
that include fighting infections, lowering cholesterol,
strengthening the blood, Boosting the immune system,
increasing physical strength and stamina, aiding longevity
and enhancing libido! It has been called a 'prefect food'
because it is so nutritionally complete.
6) Coconut oil
Coconut oil speeds up your metabolism and can actually help
you loose weight. It is also incredibly beautifying and
moisturizing for the skin and has antioxidant properties
which protect against free-radical damage, keeping the skin
youthful and healthy. Taken internally or externally coconut
oil is a great ally for any beauty skin care regime. It also
contains lauric acid, an anti-microbial fatty acid that
kills bacteria, viruses and fungi. |
